If you require a loan from the bank to get started, you will also likely need to present them with a business plan. For a sample of a typical business plan, see the subsection in this Business Guide on making a simple Business Plan . There are also many internet sites with free business plan templates.

There are some other items you will need to run the day to day financing aspect of your business and a few things you should consider. They are as follows:

You’ll need a locking cash box and lots of change. Buy the cash box at a business supply store like Staples. Arrange with the bank to order your supply of coins.

Determine if you will need a debit/credit card machine. The bank can set you up with one if need be.

Get an accounting ledger book to record your daily sales, your supply purchases, taxes collected, and your float (your money and coins you keep on hand to start the business day). Keep this updated daily because it’s really frustrating to try to fill it out after a week or two. And the government guys have no sense of humor. They like to see a neat ledger. It helps avoid audits.

If you use a computerized accounting ledger, print off hard copies of the ledger every week and file them. Then if your computer ever has a melt down, you will be safe, your records will not be lost.

Keep a record box for your receipts. Come tax time your accountant will need them to deduct your costs from your expenses. Right on the receipts exactly what the expense was for as often the store descriptions are acronyms that normal people can't read or understand. Keep business expenses on separate receipts from personal expenses. The government guys might ask to see them. Everything should be clear as to what it is and why it was purchased. It helps avoid audits and lengthy prison sentences.
